California Heritage Museum

Built in 1894 for civic leader Roy Jones and designed by architect Sumner P. Hunt, this Victorian house sat on Ocean Avenue until it was slated for demolition in the 1970s and preservationists moved it to Main Street instead. The building mixes Queen Anne details, bay windows and turned porch spindles, with the boxier, more restrained lines of Colonial Revival, and architectural historians still disagree on which style wins out. Inside, rotating exhibits cover California subjects like surfing and skateboarding, and the museum keeps Wednesday-through-Sunday hours with free admission on Fridays.
