Gamble House

On a grassy knoll above the Arroyo Seco, this is the house Charles and Henry Greene designed in 1908 as a winter home for David and Mary Gamble of Procter & Gamble. The brothers drew the furniture too, and it all still stands among teak, mahogany, maple and cedar, behind a triple front door of leaded glass patterned with a black pine. You see the inside on an hour-long docent tour. The grounds are free to walk and picnic on, and the old carriage house is the bookstore. The exterior played the Brown mansion in Back to the Future.
