Timken Museum of Art

Modernist glass and grillwork wraps this small museum in Balboa Park, letting views of the park filter into the galleries around a collection of just 60 works. Seventeenth-century Parisian tapestries woven with silk and gold thread hang in the entryway, leading to rooms holding San Diego's only Rembrandt, a 1657 St. Bartholomew, alongside Albert Bierstadt's 1864 view of Yosemite Falls and Russian icons painted in glowing wood. Admission is free, and the whole collection can be seen in under an hour.
