Lena Horne Theatre

Herbert J. Krapp designed this theater for the Chanin brothers, who opened it in 1926 as the Mansfield, named for actor Richard Mansfield. It became the Brooks Atkinson in 1960, honoring a longtime New York drama critic, the first time a theater had been named for a critic. In 2022 the Nederlander Organization renamed it again for Lena Horne, making it the first Broadway house named for a Black woman; the company's own former chairman had produced Horne's Tony-winning 1981 show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which ran 366 performances across three countries.
