Ambassador Theatre

The Shuberts built the Ambassador in 1921 as one of six theaters they raised in the district that decade, and its architect solved a lot too narrow for a normal layout by setting the auditorium on the diagonal, wide rather than deep, with a clear sightline to the stage from every seat. Herbert Krapp decorated the interior in Adam-style plasterwork across the walls, ceiling and box fronts. Operettas and musical comedies filled the stage through the 1920s, including a 592-performance run for Blossom Time. Since 2003, the Ambassador has been home to the 1996 revival of Chicago, now Broadway's longest-running revival.
