New Amsterdam Theatre

Henry Herts and Hugh Tallant gave the New Amsterdam its Art Nouveau exterior and interior when it opened October 26, 1903, with a staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Florenz Ziegfeld ran his annual Follies revues here from 1913 to 1936, keeping an office in the building and staging a smaller show on its rooftop. Water damage from a failing roof left the interior in poor shape by the time Disney bought the theater in 1993 and rebuilt it, reopening in 1997. The Lion King and Mary Poppins both played here before Aladdin moved in as the permanent tenant in 2014.
