Booth Theatre

The Booth opened October 16, 1913, built by the Shubert brothers with producer Winthrop Ames and named for the actor Edwin Booth. Architect Henry Herts gave the exterior a sgraffito finish in brown and ivory, one of the last surviving examples of that decorating technique left in New York, and set the theater back-to-back with the Shubert Theatre, sharing Shubert Alley between them. Seating tops out around 800. The stage has gone on to premiere the Pulitzer winners Sunday in the Park with George and Next to Normal, along with Tony-winning plays including The Elephant Man and I'm Not Rappaport.
