Nederlander Theatre

William Neil Smith designed the Nederlander's interior in burnished Italian walnut and gold in an early-Renaissance style when it opened as the National Theatre in 1921, seating 1,200 originally. Billy Rose bought and renamed it for himself in 1959, and after the Nederlander Organization took over in 1978 it briefly became the Trafalgar before settling on its current name in 1980, honoring founder David T. Nederlander. Grand Hotel, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Rent all had their Broadway premieres on this stage.
