This Lenox Avenue restaurant takes its name and inspiration from a Prohibition-era Harlem speakeasy that once hosted Nat King Cole, James Baldwin and Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and its walls carry a running collection of portraits of Black cultural figures. The kitchen serves soul food built around fried chicken and shrimp and grits, with a rotating live schedule of jazz, soul, funk and R&B most nights. Sunday brings the Sing Harlem choir's gospel brunch, a partnership with the Mama Foundation now in its sixteenth year and billed as the city's longest-running, running two seatings back to back.
