Pacific Shores Cocktail Lounge

A dive bar on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, Pacific Shores opened on December 6, 1941, the day before Pearl Harbor, and has stayed in one family since tuna-fishing brothers Ray and Ollie Medina bought it in 1952; Ray's daughter Kariann has run it since 2009. Walls covered in glow-in-the-dark paintings of underwater scenes date to a remodel sometime in the '70s, along with one of the first curved bar tops built in the city. Jukebox selections run from Marty Robbins and Patsy Cline through modern rock, and the noon-to-2am crowd has shifted over the decades from old-timer regulars toward a younger set.
