The building at 656 South Coast Highway in Encinitas sits on land Sydney Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin's older brother, bought in 1923, when a Los Angeles Times item described plans for a Spanish-style structure meant to hold a cafe, a barbershop and a dance floor. It's now 1st Street Bar, a dive bar with pool tables and shuffleboard where happy hour runs daily until 7 p.m. A stage runs karaoke on Sundays alongside other live music and open mic nights through the week.
