Marcus Garvey Park

A 70-foot outcrop of Manhattan schist, once called Mount Morris, kept the street grid from crossing this Harlem block and still anchors the park today. Ignatz Pilat's 1867 design graded the plain around it and planted formal circular groves in the corners; Robert Moses added stone walls, terraced walks, and a neoclassical treatment of the summit in the 1930s. The cast-iron fire watchtower atop the rock went up in 1856, the only one of eleven built citywide that still stands, and it's been a National Register landmark since 1976. A swimming pool, recreation center, and amphitheater followed between 1969 and 1971, and the amphitheater reopened in 2011 after a restoration.
