Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Three collectors, Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan, and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, opened the museum on West 53rd Street in 1929 under founding director Alfred H. Barr Jr. The current building started as a 1939 design by Philip Goodwin and Edward Durell Stone; Philip Johnson later added the sculpture garden, and a 2004 renovation by Yoshio Taniguchi relocated the main entrance and doubled the exhibition space. A 2019 expansion brought a full rehang, organizing the collection by theme rather than by chronology or region. The holdings include Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, and the museum still runs MoMA PS1, its contemporary art outpost in Queens.
