Chef Chetan Shetty opened Passerine in the former Sona space on East 20th Street in November 2024, arriving from Rania in Washington and a stint as executive chef of Indian Accent in New York. The name nods to the taxonomic order of perching birds, carried through botanical wallpaper and feather-printed upholstery in the dining room. Murukku amuse-bouches, a chicken saagwala pan-fried skin-on over spinach sauce, and a Kolhapuri lamb tartare built on sun-dried onion and chili masala anchor the menu. Dessert runs to a gulab jamun paired with green apple frozen yogurt.
