New Museum

A stack of eight aluminum-mesh boxes designed by the Tokyo firm SANAA, shifted slightly off-center from each other, has held New York's contemporary art showcase on the Bowery since 2007. Marcia Tucker founded the museum in 1977 after leaving the Whitney, wanting a place for artists the established institutions wouldn't show. A 2026 expansion by Rem Koolhaas's OMA doubled the gallery space and added a Sky Room on the seventh floor. Admission runs pay-what-you-wish on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9, with a reservation required for that slot.
