MoMA PS1

Alanna Heiss founded what became MoMA PS1 in 1971, then opened it in 1976 inside a Romanesque Revival public school building dating to 1892 that had served as Long Island City's first school until it closed in 1963. The museum formalized its affiliation with the Museum of Modern Art in January 2000, and its shows since have leaned toward contemporary artists still building a reputation rather than established names. Warm Up, the summer music series held in the courtyard, is staged inside temporary structures built each year through the Young Architects Program. Admission is free.
