Gallagher’s Steak House

Gallagher's opened on 52nd Street in 1927 as a speakeasy, then became Broadway's first steakhouse once Prohibition ended. Its front window still shows off the meat locker added in 1964, rows of porterhouses aging on the hook with handwritten tags fluttering in air kept below 36 degrees. Photos of baseball players and racehorses cover nearly every wall inside, and the room fills most nights with theatergoers eating before curtain. The menu keeps the old lineup: a wedge salad, clams casino, the dry-aged porterhouse, and cheesecake for dessert.
