Mamoun Chater, a Syrian immigrant, opened this falafel counter on MacDougal Street in 1971, and four of his sons still run it. The menu hasn't changed much since: a falafel pita stuffed with fresh vegetables and tahini, plus hummus, baba ganoush and shawarma, served out of a 200-square-foot shop in the South Village Historic District. It's counter service only, order at the register and carry your own tray to a seat. A halal menu with certified meat sits alongside vegan and gluten-free options.
