Alex Trebek donated the 62 acres to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy in 1998, and the wide fire roads that cross it, the Bantam and Castair trails among them, see a fraction of the foot traffic next door at Runyon Canyon. The route out of the free trailhead on Nichols Canyon Road climbs gently for about half a mile before a short, steep connector covered in loose gravel links up to ridge views of downtown and the San Gabriel Mountains. Dogs are allowed, and no permit or fee is required.
