Ned Doheny, son of oil tycoon Edward Doheny, moved into this Tudor Revival mansion with his wife and five children in October 1928; four months later he was found shot to death in a guest bedroom in an apparent murder-suicide. Beverly Hills bought the 16-acre estate in 1965 and opened it as a public park in 1971, and the formal gardens, fountain and pool courtyard are free to walk through daily. The mansion's staircase has turned up in enough films that it counts among Hollywood's most-used sets, though the interior only opens one weekend a month for tours.
