Montalbán Rooftop Theater

Myron Hunt and H.C. Chambers designed this Beaux-Arts building at Hollywood and Vine, which opened January 19, 1927 as the Wilkes' Vine Street Theatre, the city's first Broadway-style legitimate stage, seating 1,200. Its rooftop runs movie screenings each spring and summer, with doors at 6 p.m. and the film starting at 8, and the space doubles as a spot to play games and socialize with a full bar and concession menu before the screen comes on. The building has cycled through uses since (radio playhouse, movie house, live theater) and still hosts stage and comedy shows downstairs under its current name.
