Haji Ali Kashani-Rafye opened the original Saffron and Rose in Santa Monica in 1974, working from a recipe for milk ice cream he'd carried from Iran, and the shop later moved to what's now called Little Persia in Westwood. It took its name from its two best-selling flavors, saffron and rose, and still bases each batch on whole milk rather than water or powdered mix. Kashani-Rafye's family is still behind the counter, decades on.
