A Mission Revival building at 1439 El Prado holds the Institute of Contemporary Art's Balboa Park gallery, formed when the San Diego Art Institute, founded in 1941 as a business club that started admitting women in 1953, merged with North County's Lux Art Institute. The group calls the space a laboratory for contemporary art rather than a static collection, with recent shows built around artists working between Los Angeles and Tijuana. Admission to Central's exhibitions and events has always been free.
