The horseshoe counter at Tenth and Orange has served coffee since 1942, when it opened as Gerry's Coffee Shop; owner Clayton Rice shortened the name in 1978, and Bill Maddox and later Mary Frese have kept it running since. It holds the last original horseshoe counter left in San Diego County, and 1940s Seeburg jukeboxes still play over homemade pies, milkshakes and diner food.
