Bali Hai Restaurant

Built in 1953 from more than fifteen types of wood, this Shelter Island restaurant became Bali Hai in 1954 under Tom Ham, who had taken over the bankrupt Christian's Hut before it. It remains one of the oldest tiki temples still operating, still run by Ham's daughter, her husband and their three children. A second-floor dining deck added later looks out over San Diego Bay and the skyline, and the bar has poured more than two million Mai Tais.
