This Hillcrest ramen shop, inside the former Menya Ultra space on University Avenue, traces back to a restaurant that opened in Asahikawa, Japan in 1969 and earned recognition in Michelin's Hokkaido guide in 2012 and 2017. It's the chain's first location on the mainland U.S. after a Honolulu outpost. The broth is a double soup built from pork and chicken bones plus dried fish and seaweed, and the miso bowls, especially a butter corn version, draw the most attention. Sides include takoyaki, gyoza and a teriyaki karaage bowl, with Sapporo on draft.
