Clayton’s Coffee Shop

A horseshoe counter -- billed as the last one left in Southern California -- runs down the middle of this Coronado diner, set beside 1950s Seeburg jukeboxes still playing vintage tunes. Mary Frese has owned the place since 2008, working her way up from line cook to owner; the diner itself dates to 1938, when it opened as Gerry's Coffee Shop before taking the Clayton name in 1952. All-day breakfast shares the menu with burgers, sandwiches, dinner specials and a long list of coffee drinks.
