San Diego's waterfront shopping complex sits on landfill once known as Punta de los Muertos, with car-free paths linking more than 70 shops, galleries and eateries across freestanding buildings that mix Victorian gingerbread with traditional Mexican style. Developer Bryant Morris opened the complex in 1980, and the Port of San Diego has run it since. A hand-carved carousel built in 1895 still turns near the water's edge.
