Sunset Park

The bluff at the center of this 24-acre park gives a wide view over Upper New York Bay, taking in the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the hills of Staten Island and New Jersey. The city bought the land in 1891 and originally filled it with a pond, a six-hole golf course, and a carousel, all removed in a 1935 redesign. A WPA project replaced them with the current pool and bathhouse in 1936, an Art Deco design by Aymar Embury II that was fully restored in 1984 and still runs public swimming lessons and tai chi.
