Named for the writer Washington Irving, this full city block was bought by Kings County in 1895 and graded, planted, and fenced with iron pickets within the year. A brick-and-bluestone shelter went up at its center in 1905. A 2006-to-2008 renovation added a public plaza and garden area alongside antique-style gates and a small performance space, on top of the ball courts and playground already there.
