Landmark Tavern

Patrick Carley opened Landmark Tavern in 1868 on 11th Avenue, back when the block still faced the Hudson River. Prohibition turned the third floor into a speakeasy, and the front and rear rooms still keep their original woodburning potbelly stoves. Local lore adds a haunting: a Confederate soldier and an Irish immigrant girl are both said to appear, alongside actor George Raft, who grew up nearby. The kitchen has moved past pub standards into a fuller menu of Irish dishes like corned beef and cabbage and bangers and mash, and private dining rooms upstairs still host groups.
