Denis Woychuk bought 85 East 4th Street in 1993, a building that had housed the Ukrainian Labor Home, a socialist social club his immigrant father used to visit, and turned it into the Kraine Gallery and KGB Bar. Original stained glass from the 1920s still backs the bar, and only a faint red neon glow marks the unmarked entrance. Nightly readings have run since 1994, including a long-running Monday poetry series and a monthly science-fiction night called Fantastic Fiction. Live jazz and open mics now fill the building's adjoining Red Room most nights.
