The team behind Gulp, a Taiwanese restaurant in Long Island City, opened 56709 behind it on June 12, 2025, replacing 929, a Cantopop-themed bar that previously filled the same room. The theme shifted to 1980s Japanese City Pop: low-slung leather seats, pink and blue neon, and a wall of vinyl that guests are invited to pull from and queue up themselves. Cocktails take their names from the era's pop icons: the Usagi, a gin and rose drink with a Sailor Moon reference, and the Momoko, made with vodka, sake, and peach. Food comes from Gulp's kitchen, leaning Taiwanese-Japanese, including fried oysters with Taiwanese pickles in a miso-yuzu sauce.
