The front window at this Smith Street cocktail bar reads THIS IS NOT A BROTHEL, a wink at the space's stint as a short-lived massage parlor before Barely Disfigured opened, named after a 1932 poem by the French surrealist Paul Éluard. Narrow rooms styled like a Sleep No More set hold oversize double-starburst mirrors, walls collaged with yellow-paged open books, a red bulb over the doorway, and a canopy bed tucked into a back room. Cocktails carry names to match: the Harlot's Progress, built on blackberry liqueur, egg white and Scotch, and the Dirty Old Man, made with mezcal, chili-infused Aperol and pineapple juice.
