Catalina Casino

William Wrigley Jr. and David M. Renton opened this Art Deco and Mediterranean Revival landmark in 1929, designed by architects Sumner Spaulding and Walter Webber. Its top floor holds the Catalina Casino Ballroom, a 20,000-square-foot room with a 180-foot circular dance floor that once held 3,000 dancers under one roof. Downstairs, the 1,154-seat Avalon Theatre was the first movie house built specifically for films with sound. The circular building rises the equivalent of twelve stories and sits surrounded by water on three sides, visible from boats well before they reach Avalon Bay.
