Steve Boardner moved his bar into the Cherokee Building at Hollywood and Cherokee in January 1944, taking over space that had run as a Prohibition-era speakeasy behind a hair salon front. Tricia La Belle has owned it since 1999, and the room still spreads across three bars, a dance floor with its own DJ booth, and a patio built around a Moroccan tile fountain with a stage for live music. Every Saturday since the 1990s it turns into Bar Sinister, a goth and BDSM dance night with its own following. A jukebox runs when the stage sits empty, and the kitchen still serves a burger.
