Torrey Pines State Reserve

Torrey pines grow wild in only two places on earth: a narrow strip of San Diego coastline and an island off Santa Barbara, and this reserve holds the mainland population, gripping sandstone bluffs above the beach. Dogs aren't allowed anywhere inside the reserve or on its beach, and both parking lots charge a demand-based fee that changes by the day. Docent-guided hikes are available for groups by request, covering trails that wind along the cliffs down toward the sand.
