Bobby Riggs

A bronze statue of Bobby Riggs and the trophies from his 1973 Battle of the Sexes match against Billie Jean King still stand at the club that carries his name, on what used to be seven tennis courts in Encinitas. Steve and Jennifer Dawson began renting out courts to displaced players during a shortage, then converted the stadium court into four permanent pickleball courts; the facility now runs 22, with three still doubling as tennis courts for private lessons. A small museum holds memorabilia from Riggs alongside artifacts tied to Pancho Segura, Pancho Gonzalez, and Martina Navratilova. Courts rent by the hour, and the club also runs clinics, lessons, and open-play sessions through the evening.
