Drama Book Shop

Play scripts and theater books have sold from this shop since the Drama League founded it in 1917; it became independent in 1923 and won a Tony Award honor in 2011. Thomas Kail and Lin-Manuel Miranda bought it in 2019 with Jeffrey Seller and James L. Nederlander, after its original 40th Street location closed, and it reopened on West 39th Street in 2021 in a space designed by Hamilton's scenic designer, David Korins, modeled after European cafes and reading rooms. A cafe inside serves coffee, tea and light snacks. Kail's theater company once rehearsed In the Heights in the old store's basement theater, years before the show won its own Tony Awards.
