Antonio DiTommaso, a retired Chicago police officer, opened this deli in 1925 and added the Godmother to the menu in 1952, naming it for the way a godmother looks after the family. The sandwich stacks capicola, mortadella, Genoa salami, prosciutto and ham with provolone on bread the deli bakes in-house over a 24-hour process. Beyond the sandwich counter, the store runs an Italian specialty market with imported cheese and wine. The line can run long enough that regulars order online ahead of a visit, and the counter recommends letting a sandwich sit for half an hour before it's eaten.
