Ellen and Alan Baker opened this hamburger stand on Pico Boulevard in 1947, and the U-shaped counter still seats exactly 26 people on red leather stools. The hickory burger and a wedge of fresh cream pie are the reasons people keep coming back to a room of lacquered wood, brick and plaid that hasn't changed much in decades. For most of its history it took cash only, run on two old registers, before it began allowing cards after 2019.
