New Beverly Cinema

The building has been a variety hall where Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis once performed, a nightclub called Slapsy Maxie's, and a movie theater running under several names since it was built in 1929, before Sherman Torgan relit it in 1978 with a double feature of A Streetcar Named Desire and Last Tango in Paris. Quentin Tarantino bought the property in 2007 to keep it from redevelopment, promising double features in 35mm for as long as he's alive and rich. The 228-seat room still runs nightly double, and occasional triple, features starting at 7:30, weekend matinees at 2 for a reduced price, and a run of vintage cartoons, shorts and trailers before every show.
